What is a Torch Welding?

Within this second category, we find, for example, the so-called torch welding, more professionally also called oxyacetylene welding. This welding is commonly known by the acronym OFW (OxiFuel gas Welding), also referred to as OAW (OxyAcetylene Welding).

It is a welding process in which the combustion of acetylene creates energy in a highly oxidized environment. This process does not require electricity, which is why it was among the first to be analyzed and studied for welding (early 20th century). The filler material, usually small rods, is usually positioned under the flame during this type of welding.

Given its particular characteristics, not all materials can be welded with the aid of this technology. In addition to welding, the oxyacetylene flame is often used in brazing work, while the oxyacetylene torch can adapt for oxyfuel.

1. Heat the Temperature

First, take a piece of metal to be welded and heat it to the proper temperature. Make sure it’s evenly heated all around. You can either use a gas welding torch or an electric one.

2. Oxygen to your Torch

To start, you’ll need to add oxygen to your torch. To do this, turn it on and place a piece of welding rod inside. Then close the nozzle to the opening and slowly blow out air until it starts glowing white. It won’t light up right away but keep blowing out air.

You should only need to use a little oxygen at a time, as the torch can handle it. After you finish welding your piece of metal, you should let it cool down and then remove the welding rod and oxygen from the torch. Then clean it out.

How a Torch Welding Works

To concretely explain what this type of welding consists of and how it occurs, it must first be specified that, in torch welding, the energy required for welding is supplied by an acetylene flame in pure oxygen. Acetylene is brought into close contact with oxygen through the torch to create the flame. By combining these two gases, the torch produces a flame with the characteristics needed for successful welding.

The torches can vary their power either by a change of the head (i.e., the part in which the two gases are joined) or by using a variable ejector. The torches can have low pressure, for example, when the oxygen pressure is higher than that of acetylene.

In this case, the oxygen is accelerated in an ejector and mixed with acetylene. In high-pressure torches, oxygen, and acetylene are at the same pressure, which is why it is not necessary to use the ejector for the union between gases at the same pressure.

As you can easily imagine, one of the main disadvantages of this welding technique is the need to always keep the acetylene pressure high enough. Furthermore, during the welding operations, the torch welder must be able to regulate the flame, which must always be neutral.

Torch welding can offer excellent, precise, and sharp results, but it needs a whole series of attention and precautions, which, if neglected, do not give the desired results. For example, a weld of this type with excess oxygen would cause many burrs and weld defects, such as the accidental inclusion of oxides.

How do you Torch Weld Steel?

If you want a good job, you have to do several things: firstly, set up your weld gun correctly. This means ensuring that you’ve got the right type of arc welder and that it’s set up for your specific welding application.

In our case, we’re working with steel pipes, so we’ll be using an air-powered gas-arc welder. We need to ensure that we are feeding enough air into the gun to ensure the proper amount of oxygen is being used to fuel the flame – if not, then the welding arc won’t be able to sustain itself properly, and you’ll end up with an incomplete weld. We need to have sufficient air pressure, but not so much that it blows the tip of the gun or causes it to clog up.


So, to keep your torch warm, use a gas or electric heater in your welding booth. Make sure that your torch is fully cleaned after each use, and always keep the torch tip covered with aluminum foil.
